3 things to consider when choosing frames for your glasses

Are you looking for a new pair of glasses? With so many options available, selecting a pair of frames can be overwhelming. However, understanding certain factors will help make deciding easier. Here are three things to consider when choosing frames for your glasses.

Face shape

The shape of your face is one of the most important factors to consider when selecting frames. Here’s a brief overview of three common face shapes and the styles that suit them:

  • Round faces usually have a curved hairline. The width of the face is the same as the length. If you have this face shape, you should avoid small frames or round lenses. Square or rectangular frames will make your face appear slimmer.

  • Square faces have sharp jawlines and a forehead that’s the same approximate width as the jaw. If this describes you, avoid square frames since they can make your face look boxy. Instead, choose round or oval frames to soften the angles of your face.

  • Heart-shaped faces often have a widow’s peak, a narrow jawline and a pointed chin. The cheekbones and forehead are about the same width. If you have a heart-shaped face, look for frames that are bottom-heavy to add some weight to the bottom part of your face. Avoid embellished tops and designs that draw attention to your forehead.

Skin tone

Your skin’s undertone can be warm or cool. If you have a warm tone, you’ll look better in colours like gold or red. If you have a cool tone, look for silver, pink, blue or black frames. If you’re fair, avoid frames that are too dark unless you want to achieve a more dramatic look.

Facial features

Do you have a long or short nose? How far apart are your eyes? Your facial features can affect the way a pair of glasses look on you. Frames with a higher bridge can elongate the appearance of your nose and should be avoided if you feel you have a long nose. Finally, if you have narrow-set eyes, try frames that have a wider bridge to create the illusion of eyes that are further apart.
